Red Mangrove
The Red Mangrove is one of the four mangrove species of vegetation that are found in Mangrove Forests. The species is grouped by what role they play in the Mangrove Forests. That job, is to protect and stabilize costal lands and to also provide protection and food sources for the organisms. These trees provide a great habitat for a variety of marine life. The roots help to make a sheltered environment for fish, shellfish, and other marine animals to feed and breed.
Red Mangrove trees grow up to be 70 to 80 feet tall. They have dark green leaves that are 3 to 5 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide. They also have little, pale yellow flowers that blossem in the spring. Which then turns into fruit in the summer. The fruit is a rusty-brown berry that falls to the ground in autumn and send a root into the ground to become a new Red Mangrove tree.
The Red Mangrove is easy to pick out of the other trees because it has tall arching roots that help to keep the tree stable. The roots also help to trap mud and sediment that moves with the tide which helps to increase the amount of soil around them. They have a high tolerance for salt and are therefore found closer to the water then the other trees of its species.
The wood of the Red Mangrove Trees is used as fuel and charcoal and the bark is known for its large quantity of tannins.
Red Mangroves are found all over the world along oceans and rivers and are therefore not in danger of going extinct.
